- A camel is a large cud-chewing MAMMAL.
- It has two toes which have broad soft soles
- for walking on sand, and hooves resembling
- nails. There are just two species, the
- single-humped Arabian camel and the
- twin-humped Bactrian camel from Asia. Camels
- carry a food reserve of fatty tissue in their
- hump, and can go without drinking for very
- long periods. Camels can also feed on salty
- vegetation, and withstand extremes of heat
- and cold, thus being well adapted to desert
- conditions.
